(description) The Met’s spring 2017 exhibition Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between explores the designer’s fascination with the spaces between boundaries through about 140 pieces that challenge conventional ideas of beauty, taste, and fashion. Organized around nine thematic dualities, like Fashion/Anti-Fashion and Clothes/Not Clothes. The show highlights how Kawakubo breaks down oppositions to rethink the body and identity. Presented in a stark, immersive white space with no wall text, it encourages visitors to wander and discover freely. The exhibition opened the Costume Institute’s main annual fundraiser.
